The Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) joins with respect, firmness, and hope the cries of the peoples, communities, and Church in Panama who today face a profound social crisis marked by repression and the systematic violation of human rights.

Together with the networks of the Center for Programs and Networks of Pastoral Action of CELAM (CEPRAP) and various civil society organizations and human rights defenders in Latin America, CEAMA has signed a Open Letter of Solidarity with the Panamanian people, especially the most vulnerable communities, indigenous peoples, human rights defenders, and the Church committed to justice and peace.

From various regions of the country, especially in Bocas del Toro, repeated testimonies of abuses committed by state security forces have been received: Arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force, violent incursions, threats and direct attacks on civilians, including children, the elderly, and those not participating in the demonstrations. These acts constitute serious human rights violations and represent a direct threat to human dignity and the rule of law.

A call for justice and genuine dialogue

As the Amazonian Church, we share the pain and indignation of those who today raise their voices for life, territories, and justice. We are deeply concerned by the disproportionate use of force against Indigenous peoples and community leaders, under pretexts that conceal the criminalization of the right to social protest and the defense of the commons.

We join the urgent call:

“Disarming words and hearts” to build peace

As CEAMA, we believe thatPeace is built with justice, truth and real participation, not with impositions or forced silence. Therefore, we raise our voices to accompany, make visible, and defend those who today embody the Gospel through their commitment to the life and rights of peoples.

Let the cry of the Amazon and Panama resonate as one: There is no justice without dignity, there is no peace without respect for the people!

With respect, firmness and hopeWe will continue to walk alongside those who strive for a full life, based on faith, pastoral commitment, and a vocation for the common good.
