From August 17 to 20, 2025, Bogotá will be the epicenter of an ecclesial event of profound significance for the entire Church in the Pan-Amazon region: the Meeting of Bishops of the Amazon, convened by the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA). It will be the first time the bishops have met in person since the Synod for the Amazon in 2019, thus resuming the thread of a living, incarnated, and hopeful synodal process.

Monsignor Joaquín Humberto Pinzón, Consolata Missionary and bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Leguízamo-Solano in Colombia, is one of the pastors who will attend this meeting. For him, this moment represents “good news” for the Church, the Amazonian peoples, and the territory itself. It is an opportunity to remember, relive the prophetic call of Pope Francis, and renew our commitment to new paths for evangelization and the care of our Common Home.

“It means putting back into our hearts what Pope Francis once intended for the bishops and the entire Church in the Amazon. It means reviving the profound desire to seek new paths for evangelization, especially among indigenous peoples, who are often forgotten and without a clear future,” says Monsignor Pinzón.

This meeting is not only a space for reflection, but also for communion, listening, and concrete synodality. Monsignor Pinzón arrives in Bogotá filled with hope, eager to share the experiences of his vicariate—located in a border region rich in culture, biodiversity, and social challenges—and also to learn from the paths taken by other Amazonian territories. “We will share processes, paths, difficulties, and insights that will allow us to continue encouraging the mission,” he affirms.

Inspired by the Church’s journey in the Amazon in recent years, the bishop highlights the newness brought by the Synod: a courageous openness to the new, to diversity, to difference. “The richness of this land demands that we embrace a spirit of welcome, listening, and openness. The Amazon evangelizes us. It transforms us,” he maintains.

The Meeting will be held in a significant context: the Jubilee of Hope convened by the universal Church. For Monsignor Pinzón, this holy time must be an occasion to strengthen the hope of the Amazonian communities and renew the common commitment to mission and integral ecology. “We must continue to seek new paths for this Church that pilgrims in the Amazon and strongly reiterate our commitment to the care of our Common Home, our sister and mother, as the Laudato Sí“, he concludes.

CEAMA is thus preparing to welcome the bishops of the nine Amazonian countries to a meeting that will undoubtedly be a pastoral and prophetic milestone. Through listening to the peoples, shared reflection, and the living memory of the Synod, the Amazonian Church continues to journey with hope, creativity, and fidelity to the Gospel of Life.
