CEAMA continues to move forward with determination on its synodal journey with the appointment of Sister Sônia Maria Pinho de Matos as the new vice president representing religious life. This step reaffirms the Amazonian Church’s commitment to the increasingly active participation of consecrated women, whose presence has been historic and fundamental in these territories.

A native of Coari, in the state of Amazonas (Brazil), Sr. Sônia Maria belongs to the Congregation of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. Her missionary vocation has been deeply linked to the Amazon, where she has spent much of her religious life in direct contact with communities facing multiple social, cultural, and environmental challenges.

She currently carries out her ministry in Manaus, from where she supports various pastoral initiatives in the Amazon region. Her service is characterized by a concrete closeness to communities, especially in contexts of vulnerability, promoting processes of listening, formation, and community strengthening. Over the years, she has participated in initiatives related to social ministry, ecclesial animation, and the defense of life, coordinating efforts with other pastoral agents and organizations committed to the region.

Her career has allowed her to acquire a deep understanding of Amazonian realities, not only from a pastoral perspective, but also from a human, cultural, and spiritual one. This understanding translates into a capacity for discernment that contributes significantly to the Church’s synodal processes, where listening to the territory and its peoples is essential.

Sister Sônia Maria has been a witness to and a key player in the changes and challenges facing the Amazon, accompanying riverside, urban, and indigenous communities, and strengthening an incarnate ecclesial presence that walks with the people, shares their struggles, and celebrates their hope. Her consecrated life is expressed in a spirituality committed to justice, human dignity, and the care of our Common Home.

Her appointment as vice president of CEAMA represents a sign of hope and continuity in the building of a Church with an Amazonian face, where religious life continues to be a prophetic presence. In her, we recognize a voice that springs from the territory, an experience that enriches ecclesial discernment, and a leadership that drives a Church that is closer, more participatory, and committed to the defense of life in all its forms.

In this new service, Sr. Sônia Maria Pinho de Matos is called to continue weaving paths of communion, strengthening synodality, and accompanying, alongside so many men and women, the mission of a Church that listens, learns, and walks with the peoples of the Amazon.
