On June 29, 2025, the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) celebrates its fifth anniversary. On this anniversary, a profound sense of thanksgiving springs forth to God, to Pope Francis—the inspiration behind the Amazonian synodal process—to our beloved Cardinal Claudio Hummes (+), and to so many sisters and brothers who have been part of this ecclesial journey.
In the words of Cardinal Pedro Barreto, current president of CEAMA:
“An uncontrollable outpouring of thanksgiving to God springs forth for Pope Francis, for Dom Claudio Hummes, and also for all the sisters and brothers of the Amazon, and in a very special way, for the indigenous peoples, who for centuries have cared for this Amazonian biome and have given it to us, despite being victims of the voracity and greed of many who have exploited natural resources, deforesting, promoting illegal mining, and causing the murders of environmental leaders.”
This anniversary is also a time of renewal of ecclesial commitment. CEAMA reaffirms its purpose to continue growing as an organization at the service of the Church’s evangelizing mission in the Amazon region. A path that seeks, with profound respect for life, cultures, and peoples, to proclaim Jesus in this vital region for humanity and for our Common Home, just as missionaries and communities have done since the beginning of evangelization in the Amazon.
Five years after its creation, CEAMA remains faithful to the call of the Synod for the Amazon: to walk together, in synodality, with the peoples, in defense of life and our Common Home.
