The Amazon is preparing for a new forum centered on one of its most essential resources: water. In the lead-up to the Second Amazon Water Summit, to be held in Puerto Maldonado in 2027, the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado is organizing the First Maloka del Agua, a kickoff webinar aimed at building Amazonian networks for water and life.

The event will take place on Monday, October 5, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., and will bring together diverse voices and experiences to discuss the challenges related to the protection of water, Amazonian territories, and communities.

Under the theme “Building Amazonian Networks for Water and Life,” the First Maloka del Agua offers a space for reflection from three perspectives: indigenous territories, public policy, and the global dimension of the Amazonian crisis.

Three Perspectives for an Amazonian Dialogue

The event will feature Julio Cusurichi Palacios, who will address interculturality and indigenous territoriality; Mariano Castro Sánchez-Moreno, who will present strategies for Amazonian public water policies; and Javier Cortés Fernández, who will offer a global perspective on the Amazon crisis.

The dialogue will be enriched by diverse voices with experience in Amazonian realities. Drawing on their experience with the Summit, Monsignor Miguel Ángel Cadenas will offer reflections on the origins and vision of this process, and Bárbara Fraser will share insights regarding its development and conclusions.

The discussion will be moderated by César Ascorra, from an environmental and technical perspective, and Carol Jerí, from a social and human rights perspective. The closing remarks will be delivered by Bishop David Martínez de Aguirre, O.P., bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado.

A Path Toward the 2027 Amazon Water Summit

The First Maloka del Agua represents an initial forum for strengthening partnerships and promoting exchange among communities, organizations, institutions, and ecclesial actors committed to caring for our Common Home.

The initiative stems from a conviction expressed in the Summit’s motto: “We Are Water, We Are Life, We Are Hope.” From this perspective, the care of water is closely linked to the defense of territories, the lives of Amazonian peoples, and the development of responses to the environmental challenges facing the region.

The Second Amazon Water Summit, scheduled for 2027 in Puerto Maldonado, aims to continue this process of collaboration and dialogue, placing water at the center of concerns and proposals for the future of the Amazon.
