Today, the Amazon region speaks with one voice of gratitude. Through a video produced by CEAMA, diverse voices from the region—indigenous peoples, pastoral workers, religious sisters, laypeople, and bishops—come together to express their deep appreciation for Cardinal Pedro Barreto’s journey, dedication, and witness.
This is a tribute woven from the living memory of the Amazon, gathering experiences, words, and gestures that have marked the recent history of the Church in this territory.
A pastor with an Amazonian heart
Cardinal Barreto has been a key figure in the ecclesial processes that have given the Amazon a voice in the universal Church. His commitment has been deeply linked to the journey of the Synod on the Amazon, which opened a new horizon of listening, discernment, and pastoral action for the region.
His presence has also been fundamental in strengthening ecclesial networks such as REPAM and in consolidating CEAMA itself, as an expression of a Church with an Amazonian, synodal, and outgoing face.
Voices of gratitude, a memory that endures
The video features testimonies full of affection and recognition. These are voices arising from the territories, from the communities that have been accompanied, listened to, and defended. Voices that recognize in Cardinal Barreto a pastor who is close to the people, committed to justice, the defense of life, and the care of our Common Home.
Every word spoken in this tribute is also a shared memory: that of a Church that has learned to walk with the peoples, to listen to their cries, and to defend their rights.
A legacy that continues to give life
Beyond titles and responsibilities, Cardinal Pedro Barreto’s legacy lives on in the processes he helped to advance: a Church that is more prophetic, more committed to the Amazonian peoples, and more conscious of its mission to care for creation.
His witness continues to encourage us to continue on this path, strengthening synodality, commitment to the most vulnerable, and the defense of life in all its forms.
Today, the Amazon not only says “thank you,” but reaffirms its commitment to continue walking the path that, together with so many others, he helped to open.
