A vivid memory of Grandfather Francis’s presence and absence, as the voices of certain authoritarian leaders grow louder around the world, proclaiming war and the elimination of diversity and human richness—which is the very essence of being human.
One year into the presence/absence of Grandfather Francis, his voice remains a guiding light in the building of peace, in respect for human dignity, and in the care of our Common Home. Peace is built through daily actions, concrete deeds, and personal and collective commitment to the common good. Grandfather Francis continues to challenge us to build bridges, tear down walls, and show “peace as a continuous path of hope and not merely the absence of war.”
I hear his voice, serene yet firm: peace begins when we disarm our hearts and fight for justice, which is a fundamental condition for the life of all living beings, for the air, the earth, the forests, people, and all microorganisms have the right to live and coexist in interconnectedness.
He, in his presence/absence, remains alive in the Amazon through his courage in bringing to the forefront this periphery that is vital for the good of all humanity. By amplifying the voices of the peoples “who carry in sacred vessels the perfumes of hope, which continue to perfume the continent against all despair.”
Feel the presence/absence of this being of light, who was enchanted and immortalized in the stars of the firmament, reminding us that, despite the darkness of these gloomy times, the stars will guide us and the night breeze will encourage us when discouragement takes hold of us. The stars will encourage us; be courageous.
I dream here from the Beloved Amazon, with Grandfather Francis whispering in our ears: be seeds of hope and justice, so that present and future generations may have a common home in which to live. Be bold and persistent in the search for peace, and do not be afraid. You are the present moment of history; do not be deceived by false solutions, by fear, by individualism, or by a lack of will to live and transform the world. The life that beats in your hearts and spirits will lead you to build a world that is possible for all. Utopia is the path that drives us to work and to be builders of bridges. Take heart; do not be afraid!
