The Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) expressed its deep dismay and rejection after learning of the discovery of a mass grave with the lifeless bodies of eight people in the municipality of Calamar, Guaviare, who had been missing since April 4. Among the victims were social and religious leaders, recognized for their spiritual and community support to the populations of this area of the Colombian Amazon.
The incident was confirmed by the Attorney General’s Office, generating a strong impact on the local and national Church. In an official statement, CEAMA joined the voice of theDiocese of San José del Guaviare and of theDelegation for Church-State Relations of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia, who have strongly condemned this crime and expressed their solidarity with the affected families and communities.
“Today more than ever, humanity cries out and invokes peace. It is a cry that demands responsibility and reason, and must not be drowned out by the thunder of weapons or by rhetorical words that incite conflict.”, the statement quoted, recalling the words of Pope Leo XIV, spoken on June 22.
From CEAMA it is emphasized that this act represents a deep wound for the social, spiritual and territorial fabric of the Amazon, and an urgent call is made to the armed actors to stop the spiral of violence which continues to threaten the lives of leaders and communities.
Likewise, the Colombian State is urged to ensure comprehensive protection of those who work from the grassroots for peace, justice, spirituality and the defense of human and environmental rights.
In communion with the Amazonian Church and the affected communities, CEAMA reaffirms its commitment to defending life and building paths of reconciliation, driven by the Gospel and the hope sown among the peoples of the Amazon.
